The process of files being corrupted caused by some hardware or software failure is referred to as data corruption and this is one of the main problems which web hosting companies face as the larger a hard disk is and the more information is filed on it, the much more likely it is for data to be corrupted. There are various fail-safes, yet often the information gets corrupted silently, so neither the file system, nor the admins notice a thing. As a result, a corrupted file will be handled as a good one and if the HDD is part of a RAID, that file will be copied on all other disk drives. In theory, this is done for redundancy, but in reality the damage will be even worse. Once a file gets damaged, it will be partially or completely unreadable, so a text file will not be readable, an image file will present a random mix of colors if it opens at all and an archive will be impossible to unpack, and you risk losing your site content. Although the most commonly used server file systems feature various checks, they frequently fail to detect a problem early enough or require a vast amount of time to be able to check all the files and the hosting server will not be operational in the meantime.
No Data Corruption & Data Integrity in Website Hosting
We've resolved the matter of silent data corruption on all our website hosting
servers by using the amazing Z file system, or ZFS. The latter is superior to other file systems as it is the only one on the market that checks all the files instantly by using a checksum - a digital identifier which is unique for each file. When you upload content to your account, it will be stored on several SSD drives and constantly synchronized between them for redundancy. ZFS constantly analyzes the checksum of all files and in the event that any file is detected as corrupted, it's replaced immediately with a good copy from another disk. As this happens in real time, there's no risk that a damaged file may remain or may be duplicated on the rest of the SSDs. ZFS requires lots of physical memory in order to perform the real-time checks and the benefit of our cloud website hosting platform is that we use multiple powerful servers working together. If you host your Internet sites with us, your data will be intact no matter what.
No Data Corruption & Data Integrity in Semi-dedicated Hosting
We've avoided any possibility of files getting corrupted silently since the servers where your semi-dedicated hosting
account will be created use a powerful file system called ZFS. Its basic advantage over alternative file systems is that it uses a unique checksum for each and every file - a digital fingerprint that's checked in real time. As we save all content on a number of SSD drives, ZFS checks if the fingerprint of a file on one drive corresponds to the one on the remaining drives and the one it has saved. When there's a mismatch, the corrupted copy is replaced with a good one from one of the other drives and since it happens instantly, there's no chance that a damaged copy can remain on our hosting servers or that it could be duplicated to the other hard drives in the RAID. None of the other file systems use this type of checks and what's more, even during a file system check right after a sudden power loss, none of them can identify silently corrupted files. In contrast, ZFS doesn't crash after a power loss and the regular checksum monitoring makes a lenghty file system check unneeded.
